About Our Magnet Program

Our school is driven by the belief that the world is in need of active global citizens who are “engaged in the world, knowledgeable about its diversity and passionate about change” (globalcitizen.org). Our goal is to empower our students by breaking down various components of local and worldwide issues, with an emphasis on social studies and science where students learn to comprehend, question, and investigate all-views of a situation before drawing definitive conclusions.

We recognize that in this ever-changing world, it is important for students to have a meaningful perspective about who they are and their place in society.  The primary purpose of global awareness is to provide knowledge that “recognizes our world is an increasingly complex web of connections and interdependencies. One in which our choices and actions may have repercussions for people and communities locally, nationally or internationally” www.ideas-forum.org.uk Acknowledging and challenging information in real life scenarios allows for meaningful learning through personal connections. It is essential to help young students develop the ability to make informed and “reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.” (NCSS Task Force on Standards for Teaching and Learning in the Social Studies, 1993). As technology advances, younger generations are now faced with differentiating fact from fiction and logic from emotions. Current world views are being challenged in greater force due to easy accessibility of information at the click of a button. Students must know how to decipher information and determine its validity before assimilating it into their knowledge base.

Our Magnet team of teachers is fully committed to raise a generation of global citizens who are driven by empathy and respect for differences and diversity in this every-changing world.
